Security

Introduction

Security is a major issue in today's world. Security of computers on the network is essential. Security of information in electronic formats is a major concern of businesses, individuals, and the government alike. System security has to do with the physical security of your system, much like Network security is about preventing undesired remote access, System security is about keeping unauthorized users from sitting down at your server or workstation and thereby gaining access to it. This section explores various techniques used in each type of security and some preventative measures that you can take to secure your data and equipment.

Security v. Privacy

To get the best understanding of security on electronic systems, the difference between the terms, "security" and "privacy" should be defined. Security addresses mere access to a system, while privacy addresses access to information stored on that system, particularly personal information and records but in general privacy encompasses all data stored on a system.

Terminology

Another thing about security is the user that is trying to exploit a system. The term "hacker" has been used to mean someone who maliciously accesses other systems, however, this term is not entirely accurate. "Hacker" corresponds to the extremely avid computer user who explores systems to a great extent, learning how to perfect them. The term "cracker" should instead be used to designate a malicious user who tries to gain access to a system to obtain information from it and pursue their own, likely illegal interests.
