CECS Labs Information

Note: the following information has been consolidated from the barefoot.cecs information site, linked above.

Locations

Windows Labs are located in the ECS building (East Campus) rooms 306, 312, 403, 404, 407, 411, and 413. Linux Labs are located in the ECS building rooms 412, 414, 416. Each lab has between 20 and 30 workstations. Hours are posted on the barefoot site; check for the current season.

Common Practices

When working on a Windows workstation, your account files will be connected as network drive Z:\ Because this is a network drive, it is better to copy the files you'll be working on to the local D:\ workspace, and copy the results back to Z:\ before logging off. It is critical that you copy your files off of the D:\ drive because it is deleted every day.

Paper Accounts

The CECS Department allows its students and faculty to print through a paper account. You must submit paper to the department; it will be credited to your CECS account, and you will be able to print as many pages as you have remaining in your account. To submit paper, leave an unopened package of 500 sheets of paper, 8.5 x 11 inches, in the box by the elevators on the 4th floor of ECS, with your Real Name and CECS account name written on the outside. Do nothing more than these instructions! You may leave more than one package at a time. To check the status of your paper account, type paper at a Linux command line, or open the desktop item "Paper Account" on a Windows machine. Follow the instructions.

Connectivity

All lab workstations are connected to the Internet; one must have a CECS user account to log in. Wireless connectivity is also available for laptop users, using the same procedures as the rest of the campus. It is possible to use telent and ftp, as well as email, from a remote location. Using whatever client for those protocols that you prefer, connect to heart.cecs.csulb.edu using your CECS account information. To forward your CECS email to another account, create a file in your home directory called .forward (read "dot forward") Don't leave the ".txt" that will be added by Windows Notepad. Remember this is in the Z:\ directory or in your home directory on Linux (do cd ~ on the commandline). The file should look like this:

myName@csulb.edu, me.myname@verizon.net

The Department requests that no user forward his CECS email to a free account that is susceptible to spam, as that will overload Department equipment.
